Guru Basavanna – Earn wealth through honest and truthful work

By: Raksha Sarvi

Guru Basavanna once said ”Earn wealth through honest and truthful work” . In this text Basava is talking about how you shouldn’t lie and cheat yourself in your work. Cheating yourself won’t do any good to you other than getting the task done on time. But lying for the sake of it will just store guilt and pressure inside of you. And soon enough you will be caught for slacking off. When you are working think of it as worship, even if you don’t like it.

The vachana Kaḷabēḍa, kolabēḍa, teaches us not to lie and not to steal. The first line Kaḷabēḍa, kolabēḍa, husiya nuḍiyalu bēḍa says do not steal, do not kill and, do not lie. The second line says muniya bēḍa, an’yarige asahya paḍa bēḍa means do not be angry, do not be scornful of others. The third line tanna baṇṇisa bēḍa, idira haḷiyalu bēḍa. This line means do not glorify yourself, do not insult others. The fourth line says idē antaraṅga śudhi, idē bahiraṅga śudhi. It means These are the means to inward purity, these are the means to outward purity. Here it means that this is how you cleanse yourself from being mean and hurtful to others. Finally the last line says idē nam’ma kūḍalasaṅgama devaranolisuva pari. Here, he says that these are the means to please Kudalasangamadeva. He is also saying his pen name.
